How to Sell Your Collectibles.
So you've decided to sell your cherished treasures! How do you get the most value for your items? Where and how to sell depends in large part on what you're selling, its value and it's desirability. If your items are hot collectibles and in demand (eg comic books) then your options for finding buyers is plentiful. If your items don't have universal appeal (eg Peruvian coins), then you need as broad of a market as possible to reach the most prospsective buyers. If your items are low in value and/or big and bulky, then selling them online and mailing them becomes cost prohibitive.
If you're like most people the first thing you do is call the nearest retail store in your area. You are flabbergasted at their offer - 50% of their value. What do I do now, you ask? Well, here are some selling options.
1. Local Brick and Mortar businesses.
Pros: Easily accessible. Great for quick sale.
Cons: High overhead = huge mark up on their items = lower offer to you. Not usually your best bet for full value.
2. Online auction sites - Ebay/Amazon/Etsy...
Pros: Great way to reach a national audience.
Cons: Typical fees can be 15% or more. Very time consuming. Low value items often cost more to ship than
they are worth.
3. Local internet directories - Craigslist, Offerup...
Pros: Usually free listings and simple to use.
Cons: Lots of resellers looking for bargains. Meet unknown people in strange places. Not for everyone.
4. Local Auction companies.
Pros: Most local auctioneers sell anything and everything. Easy to do, sign consignment form, drop off items, wait for check.
Cons: Little appreciation for your beloved belongings. Quick pics and listing, usually no detailed description or targeted marketing of your items. Fees can range from 15-30%.
5. Private Party/Collectors.
Pros: Usually your best bet for top dollar...
Cons: If you can find them.
6. Garage sales Swap meets.
